Programme Outline

The aim of this programme is to assist students who have minimal knowledge of English to reach a level of English at which they can function mostly independently on a daily basis with a degree of confidence e.g. board the right bus, buy food, find their way around, be able to use greetings, be polite, etc. They will also be at a level where they are ready to enrol on the Elementary level course.

 

 

Highlights

Read, identify and understand words, short sentences and basic texts. Write simple sentences in English using words in the correct order. Understand basic conversations on familiar topics in familiar contexts. Introduce oneself and interact with others using the basic English phrases.

1. Minimum of 14 years old.
2. International students are required to hold a current visa and medical insurance.
3. There are no academic requirements for this course.
4. Students are required to sit an internal placement test or provide validated evidence of English proficiency prior to start of the course to establish their entrant level.

The aim of this course is to develop learners’ English language skills at a level so they can be confident in using English with native speakers. Learners should develop elementary English language skills and be confident in applying them to familiar topics and to understand how to use basic language for everyday tasks. By the end of this course they should operate more independently when performing more demanding tasks such as opening a bank account, making appointments over the phone, talking to their child’s teacher etc.

Upon completion of this course students will be ready to enroll on the Kiwi English (Pre-intermediate).

The aim of this course is to develop learners’ English language skills at a pre-intermediate level, so they can communicate reasonably well, both orally and in writing and appropriately in real life situations. The course also prepares students to develop the ability to apply English language skills to new learning. Upon completion of this course learners should be able to explain their opinions reasonably well and can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. There is an expectation that at this level they begin to identify and understand implied meanings and work with a greater degree of independence.

Upon completion of this course students will be ready to enroll on the Kiwi English (Intermediate).

Programme Outline

The aim of this course is to develop learners’ English language skills at an Intermediate level so they are able to communicate accurately and fluently in the classroom and social situations where they can express thoughts on more abstract, cultural topics such as films, books, music etc. Learners should be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. Upon completion of this course students should be able to comprehend longer and more involved reading texts and listening activities and answer the questions involved with them. Their use of the correct grammar and vocabulary should be at a level at which we would expect them to be confident communicators in most social interactions.

Upon completion of this course students will be ready to enroll on the Kiwi English (Upper-intermediate).

Programme Outline

The aim of this course is to develop learners’ English language skills at an Upper-intermediate level so they are able to communicate effectively and appropriately in real life situations. The course has been designed to prepare students to be confident and accurate users of English in all four English language skills. It is expected that students who complete this course will be able to qualify their opinions to a degree at which they can answer spontaneously when asked questions. They will be applying their knowledge and their use of grammar with few errors and be able to give short presentations on a familiar topic to their classmates. It is expected overall fluency will be at the stage where they do not need to rely on their ethnic language for understanding the English equivalent of words or phrases.

Upon completion of this course students will be ready to enroll on the Kiwi English (Advanced and IELTS Preparation) and have an English language proficiency level equivalent to an IELTS level of 5.5.

Programme Outline

The aim of this course is to develop learners’ English language skills at a level at which they can communicate effectively and appropriately in real life situations. The course also prepares students to be confident and accurate users in all four areas of English language. Self-correction should be almost a natural reflex and they should be able to keep up and contribute equally to a conversation with three or more native speakers. They should be able to manage the same type of reading material as senior secondary school students and publications and websites in English will not present any problems for them.

Upon completion of this course students will have acquired the skills required to achieve an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher.
